Magazine Scam
Eyewitness News Photo

Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia

Any time we're approached and asked to help out a good cause, we're more than likely willing to help out.

And that's exactly how one alleged scam is getting money from people here in Charleston

People are going door-to-door, marketing themselves as a legitimate business. Makin' Moves is their so called company name, but Charleston police said they are scammers.

These scammers are offering to sell phony magazine subscriptions to steal your money.

"We have run across some of those individuals who do have subscription forms and things of that nature. They're all dress professionally and they are polite," Lt. Steve Cooper, with Charleston Police, said.

With the suspects targeting the South Hills area in Charleston, several people have already fallen victim to the scam.

Cooper said many people are writing Makin' Moves a check and those alleged scammers are immediately cashing those checks.

And there sales plan seems to be working.

If you want to subscribe to a magazine, the salesmen are happy.

If you don't, they offer to send the subscription you paid for to a wounded warrior. And who can say "No" to that?

Police said Makin' Moves is not a licensed business, and the so called ring leader of the scam, Osbourne Jackson, is a career criminal. So his alleged involvement doesn't surprise police.

"He's got a criminal history that's fairly lengthy," Cooper said.

Jackson told police he was arrested in Chicago, Ill. just last week for this same kind of scam. And before that, police said he served time in a Texas prison.

"Where he's from. What his background is. He tells a different story to just about everyone that he talks to," Cooper said.

Preying on the kindness of strangers, who are now out thousands of dollars here in Charleston - and that is money police can say, without a doubt, is not going to Wounded Warriors.

"When approached about supporting causes or charities, such as wounded warriors, wounded veterans, if you're not sure who you're dealing with, it's not worth the risk," Cooper advised.

And just some things to keep in mind when dealing with these scams.

- The Better Business Bureau suggests that you remember that you do not have to deal with salesman coming to your home. If you feel at all threatened, call police immediately.

- Do not invite the salesman into your home

- And just like this case with Makin'' Moves, many scammers will use sad stories. Don't be tricked into one.

A- nd if you decided to buy, pay with a credit card, in case the purchase needs to traced and challenged.

As for Makin'' Moves, police are asking you not to open the door and to call police immediately.
