A man pleaded guilty on Friday in Kanawha Circuit Court in connection with the stabbing death of a woman at her Jefferson Avenue home in St. Albans.

Timothy Shafer pleaded guilty in the January death of Nancy Lynch, 66. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy, two counts of nighttime burglary by breaking and entering, first-degree murder, daytime burglary by breaking and entering and two counts of grand larceny.

Two other people were charged in the case. On Wednesday, Megan Marie Hughes, 28, pleaded guilty to burglary and accessory after the fact. The trial of Jessica May Wilson has been delayed as she has been deemed incompetent to stand trial.

Shafer said he, Hughes and Wilson came up with the plan to rob Lynch of pills and money because they "were out."

Shafer said he and Wilson went to Lynch's home, he had a fake gun, and she had a butcher knife, and Wilson became enraged when Lynch wouldn't give her a correct debit card number. He said Wilson stabbed Lynch several times in the neck.

"Her eyes clouded over, and she wasn't moving anymore," he said.

At one point, Shafer also turned around and apologized to victim’s family.

"I would like to apologize to the victim's family. I didn't intend for Nancy to get hurt and I'm sorry that you had lost her," he said.

Shafer’s sentencing set for 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 22. The state will recommend mercy on the murder charge, but will stand silent on the other charges.

"It gives the court a lot of options. The court could run it's sentences concurrently or consecutively. The court could give mercy or the court could give no mercy," Kanawha County Assistant Prosecutor Dan Holstein said.
