Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia

The chain of events started in Kanawha City, near the Baskin Robbins on 42nd street. That's where the first wreck happened. The vehicles both pulled off to the side of the road. Police said the male driver started hitting the window of the other car. That woman inside was too scared to talk to the frantic man, and stayed in her car. The man then tried to leave, and backed into another car as he took off. He then drove off west on Maccorkle Avenue.

8 minutes later, a 3rd accident was reported at the intersection of Court and Washington streets. The man drove off again. He was then involved in 2 accidents on the Washington Street Bridge over the Elk River. He hit one of those vehicles 5 times, possibly trying to move it out of his way. That's a total of 5 wrecks. He then got on I-79. That's where he lost control and rolled his car 2 miles north of the mink shoals exit.

"I said to myself he's either going to kill himself or somebody," said an eyewitness to the fatal crash Bobby Newhouse.

It was an erratic chain of events that did leave the driver of the car dead. Police said it all started around 2 Thursday afternoon when metro 911 dispatchers started getting reports of a man driving recklessly, hitting cars in Kanawha City, and then continuing his path of destruction onto I-79.

"He almost hit me. I thought he hit a black jeep, trying to get in between two other vehicles," said Newhouse.

Newhouse said the man driving the car passed him on I-79 near the Mink Shoals exits going at least 80 to 90 miles per hour. The man wrecked his car about one mile after passing Newhouse. That's when Newhouse tried to save the man's life.

"He had a pulse, but he wasn't breathing on his own. They worked on him, but it didn't look good," Newhouse added.

The man died a short time after the wreck at a local hospital. Police said the man wasn't wearing a seatbelt while he was driving. They said they also found empty beer cans at the scene, but at this point can't pinpoint what lead to this deadly crash.

"There were all kinds of debris out here, beer cans, water bottles and that's like that all over the interstate right here," said Corporal Brian Jones with the Charleston Police Department.

For those who witnessed this, they said they were afraid something bad was going to happen to the driver, or to someone else in his way.

"A mile up the road and you see the outcome," added Newhouse.

Authorities said a driver who hit multiple vehicles and fled the scene has died from injuries he received when he flipped his vehicle on Interstate 79 near Mink Shoals.

Charleston police said the incident began about 2 p.m. Thursday in Kanawha City near Baskin Robbins after the man backed his car into another vehicle. He gave the driver of that vehicle his driver's license and then left the scene and was followed by the other driver.

Metro 911 started receiving multiple calls about the erratic driver, and about eight minutes later a second crash was reported at Court and Washington streets, city police said.

Police said the man then drove onto I-79 and crashed about two miles north of Mink Shoals, flipping his vehicle several times. Kanawha County deputies said the man was not wearing a seat belt, and he was ejected from the vehicle.

The man was pronounced dead at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital.

A news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office said the driver struck several vehicles in Charleston city limits. Those wrecks are being investigated by Charleston police. The vehicle caused three crashes outside of city limits. All of those out-of-city-limits wrecks are being investigated by the sheriff's office.

Metro 911 reported the driver was weaving in and out of traffic and was traveling more than 100 mph. The car involved in the incidents and the fatal crash was a 2003 Chevrolet Impala.

Charleston police said a man was critically injured Thursday after he flipped his vehicle on Interstate 79 near Mink Shoals after erratically driving through the capital city and striking multiple vehicles.

The incident apparently began on 42nd Street in Kanawha City near Baskin Robbins.

The man then drove through the East End and ended up on the interstate. Metro 911 reported it received fix or six calls about the man striking or nearly striking vehicles during the incident.

Police said the crash occurred on I-79 about two miles north of the Mink Shoals exit. The man was ejected from the vehicle that rolled several times.
