Being prepared is the first rule in scouting.

Now scouts are preparing for the consolidation of two local Boy Scouts of America councils.

The BSA officially merged the Buckskin Council and the Tri-State Area Council to form the expanded Buckskin Council, which launched on July 1.

The consolidated council will offer innovative opportunities for local youth, including weekend, seasonal and resident camping facilities.

Rick Atkins, scoutmaster of Troop 195 of South Charleston, said this is a great opportunity for all scouts involved in the merger.

“Scouts in the Buckskin Council can now attend camps previously overseen by the Tri-State Area Council, and the same goes for scouts previously in the Tri-State Area Council,” Atkins said. “With more support, there will also be more emphasis on scouts at the local level, which is good.”

The merger combines the two councils under one name, but officials said troop numbers will stay the same and all current camp properties will continue to be utilized.

Some of the larger camps within the expanded Buckskin Council include Camp Logan in Garrette Fork, W.Va., and the Buckskin Scout Reservation in Dunmore, W.Va.

More than 140 scouts earned the rank of Eagle Scout last year in these councils; the rank of Eagle Scout is the highest honor in the scouting community.
