Some folks in Charleston are hoping to put smiles on several kids’ faces, and, of course, toys are involved, and it’s all for a good cause.
Tony's Kids Christmas in July is making sure the children in our area have a fun and active summer.
"It's not Christmas,” Tony Wazelle said. “It's not his birthday, or her birthday. And bam! There's a new toy!"
And that's the reaction Wazelle hopes many kids have this summer, as he takes on the role of Santa for Tony's Kids Christmas in July.
It’s an idea that was put in action after Wazelle did some thinking.
"Everybody tries to help the underprivileged children at Christmas,” Wazelle said. “And then, in the summer time, it's hot, it's when they should be outside playing and doing stuff, no toys."
But thanks to Wazelle and other boaters in Charleston, that's all about to change.
Mountain Mission teamed up with Tony's Kids and will be making sure this summer isn't spent in front of a TV.
Wazelle said any toy other than video games is perfect.
"Bicycles, footballs, basketballs," he said.
Maureen Burdette also works with the group.
"It's taken off a lot more than we thought,” she said. “We weren't sure how it'd go in the beginning."
Rows of bikes, bags of toys and plenty of donations - all proof Christmas in July has taken off.
Even U.S. Rep. Shelly Moore Capito and her team made a donation earlier this week.
"One of her people dropped off, I think it was about $300 worth of toys,” Wazelle said. “That was very unexpected."
Unexpected, much like the new toys so many children in the area will soon receive.
This was the first year for the event and Wazelle hopes to do it annually.
