After finishing up their perfect 13-0 season, players with the West Virginia Lightning were looking forward to playing in the championship game against the Morganton Bobcats from North Carolina.

The game was never played, but the championship was still given to the Bobcats.

"Throughout the season, everybody worked really hard,” right guard Brian Duncan said. “Guys just really came together."

After finishing their undefeated season, Duncan and his teammates were looking forward to playing in the league championship against the Morganton Bobcats from North Carolina. The Lightning's owner, Dan Reed, said the league commissioner was supposed to find a place for the game to be played, but failed to do that.

"We offered to host it,” Reed said. “The other team didn't want to come here because it wasn't neutral."

Reed offered to play the game on the Bobcats’ field, but they didn't want to do that. Reed kept trying to find another spot to play, but the league decided to cancel the game.

"They ruled it as a default no contest, no game but they reported it as a forfeit on us and awarded the other team the league championship," Reed said.

Reed and his players say they never forfeited the game. They said the league fumbled the ball trying to find a field, and blamed it on the Lightning.

Duncan said it was very disappointing.

"At the end of the season to have such a big buildup and all of the sudden that one big letdown, it kind of ruined everything,” he said.

Meanwhile, there are still some semi-pro leagues going on, and a few of them have invited the Lighting to play in their leagues, so there is a chance the team can still have a championship season this year.
