Wreathes placed on the Charleston Police Memorial are gone.
"Well I was upset, I was very upset about it, you know, that somebody had taken them off," Patty Roush said.
Roush visits the memorial and lays wreathes down every year to honor fallen Charleston police officers, most importantly, her father-in-law Lt. Delbert Roush.
The memorial stands where Roush and Officer Eddie Duncan were shot and killed in the line of duty June 26, 1981.
Roush remembers laying down the wreathes this year.
"This year, I placed it right here and then the small one, I placed right here on the other side," she said.
Roush placed wreathes on the memorial last Thursday, which was the 33rd anniversary of the 1981 shooting.
When she drove by Saturday, they were still there. But on her way to church Sunday, they were gone.
Lt. Steve Cooper with Charleston Police said this is the first time anything like this has happened.
"There's a lot of traffic through here and, at night, there's a lot of foot traffic. So we've been fortunate that there hasn't been anything disrespectful in the past," Cooper said.
For the family, the memorial is a place to remember.
For police, it's a reminder of the real dangers of their job.
And that's why Charleston Police are now investigating the incident, to find who would take something so sentimental.
"For the most part, people honor law enforcement and they respect the sacrifice,” Cooper said. “It really speaks to character of those who did this. It really speaks to their character."
If you have any information about the incident, you are asked to call Charleston Police at 304-348-6480.
