Arthur Threatens Beaches
Eyewitness News Photo

Wilmington

Tropical Storm Arthur gained strength overnight as it headed north off the Florida Coast. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center expect Arthur to strengthen to a hurricane -- sustained winds of greater than 74 mph -- by Thursday as it moves southeast of Myrtle Beach.

Heavy rain and wind is expected at Myrtle Beach Thursday. Winds could be sustained between 30 mph to 50 mph with higher gusts. The rain and wind should begin to subside there Thursday night, with much improved conditions Friday.

The beaches of North Carolina will bear the brunt of Arthur Thursday night into Friday morning, especially from Topsail Island east to the Outer Banks. Winds could be sustained at more than 60 mph at Cape Hatteras during that time. Rapid improvement would follow Friday afternoon as the storm accelerates off the northeast.

Be advised if you are heading to the beach this weekend that rip currents will remain a threat, even long after the storm has departed. Exercise caution if in the water and follow lifeguard orders.
