Ravenswood , Jackson County , West Virginia
Strapped to a gurney, Daniel Welsh, 37, is carted off to the hospital and then to the Jackson County Courthouse.
Ravenswood Police officers said the Wood County man was drunk, disorderly, armed and riding on a four-wheeler when they approached him at the Ravenswood Wendy's Tuesday morning.
Ravenswood Police Chief Lance Morrison said his lieutenant asked Welch several times to put his hands up but Welch did not cooperate.
"The last time my lieutenant told him to do that he turned, put his hands in his pocket," said Morrison, who was called in on his day off. "My lieutenant reached for his taser and at that point the guy turned and pointed the firearm at my lieutenant and said this isn't the way it's gonna happen."
Police said Welsh then took off.
"The subject took off running towards the gravel pit into the railroad track and still in possession of one firearm," Morrison said.
Officers then called West Virginia State Police and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department for backup. Ravenswood resident Jeff Havis said the strong police presence caused quite a scare in the small community.
"I was standing here and I seen police officers with their blue lights heading down there, down by the river," Havis said.
State and local police, along with deputy sheriff's, tried to negotiate with Welch but they said they were forced to hit him with a bean bag gun and then finally took him into custody. Morrison said they found two stolen guns in Welch's possession but the Wood County man said they were not his.
Welch is no stranger to the law. He was convicted of attempted murder in California. Ravenswood residents said they are thankful Welch is off the streets yet again.
Welch is charged with felony possession of a firearm, among other charges.
Police have released the name of a man who was taken into custody after they said he pulled a gun on an officer.
Ravenswood police said Daniel Welsh, 37, of Wood County is facing charges after the incident.
