It's a way of life in southern West Virginia.
"Get out in nature, get out and do something, the adrenaline," ATV rider Ryan Smith said.
"I got my first four-wheeler in kindergarten," ATV rider Denesha Fouch said.
"The fresh air hitting me,” Trevor Hurst another ATV rider said.
While riding an ATV is a good way to get out into the woods, it can also be dangerous. In just the past couple of weeks, there have been three people killed on ATVs in our area.
Hurst said even though he is worried about getting hurt, he never wears a helmet.
“I don’t fear death,” Hurst said.
While Hurst opts not to wear a helmet, Smith and his friends have been riding for years. He said they always wear protective equipment like helmets, boots and chest protectors.
"You've got to keep yourself protected at all times," Smith said.
ATV Safety.org said it's also important to wear long sleeves, not to ride under the influence of drugs and alcohol and to keep off of paved roads. You can also add some safety equipment to your four-wheeler.
There is always going to be some risk riding ATVs. Smith and his friends said they've even broken bones, but insist those accidents would have been much worse had they not been wearing safety gear, and if they weren't familiar with the trails they were on.
"I think people just get too carried away. They need to try and ride in their limits, get more experience," Smith said.
