Bond Bomb Case

Evans , Jackson County , West Virginia

With no apparent criminal background, Blake Garnes, 20, of Evans apparently has a much deeper and darker personal background that deputies said he outlined in handwritten notes found around his grandmother's home where they found a bomb on Wednesday night.

"I swear, so help me God," were the few words Garnes said as he was arraigned on charges of making terroristic threats and possessing an incendiary device. Deputies said they believe the homemade bomb had the ability to cause "significant damage."

"We did in fact find what I would call a relatively crude homemade explosive device at Mr. Garnes' residence," Jackson County Sheriff Tony Boggs said.

Jackson deputies got information from a confidential informant, who is currently in jail, that, a few weeks ago Garnes showed off the bomb he was storing in an outside shed at his grandmother's house.

The confidential informant claimed Garnes said he built it from scratch, and that it was made up of nails, BBs, ball bearings, bolts and gunpowder. He allegedly told the group that his intention was to build similar ones and set it off at his own family's home, or the playground of nearby Evans Elementary, specifically when there were children there.

"He had built it, he had played with it and was intending to detonate it at some point in time," Boggs said. "Just kind of waiting on the right opportunity from what I understand."

Inside the home, deputies said they found handwritten notes that Garnes later admitted to writing, detailing his fascination with death, misery and killing people and children. He allegedly told deputies he "enjoyed pain," was fascinated by explosives and had nightmares of killing people on a daily basis.

Garnes also allegedly told deputies he only missing the fuse to detonate the device, and had given extensive thought into just how and where he was going to do it.

"There may have been several different targets at any given time over the last year or so," Boggs said.

The confidential informant described Garnes to deputies as being emotionally disturbed and lived with his grandmother because of his hatred toward other family members.

If Garnes is convicted, he faces two to 13 years in prison. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

A magistrate set a $500,000 bond with the condition of home confinement for a man accused of threatening to detonate a bomb at a Jackson County elementary school.

Jackson County Magistrate Tom Reynolds set the bond on Thursday for Blake Ryan Garnes, 20, of Evans.

Garnes is charged with terrorist threats and possession of an incendiary device after he allegedly threatened to blow up the bomb on the playground of Evans Elementary School, according to a complaint filed in magistrate court.

Authorities found the bomb at Garnes' grandmother's house after a person who had worked as a confidential informant for authorities said Garnes had told him about the threat, showed him the bomb and said he had designed it to be full of projectiles to cause as much destruction as possible.

The complaint said authorities discovered writings at the residence that detailed Garnes' fascination with death and explosives. He also allegedly told the informant that he dreamed about killing people.
