A woman who pleaded guilty to her role in a Kanwha County murder got her punishment Tuesday, but it was *outside* the courtroom that sparks went flying.

Kelsey Legg will spend the next eight years in prison for her role in carrying out Kareem Hunter's murder and trying to cover it up. That sentence had Hunter's family furious and it showed as they and Legg's families left court Tuesday.

The courtroom was packed Tuesday for the sentencing of Kelsey Legg, who is one of three people accused in carrying out the murder of Kareem Hunter.

"I wish I could take it all back but I can't," Legg said.

Before the judge sentenced Legg, Hunter's family wanted to insist she get the maximum sentence. Hunter's sister started to read a letter from her mother.

"Miss Legg claimed...I can't do it," Yvonne Hunter, Kareem's sister, said.

So Kareem Hunter's mother stepped forward, emotionally telling the judge about the pain of losing her son.

"I will never get over the death of my son, and a piece of my heart died along with him," said Kareem's mother, Linda Hunter.

She continued to talk about the struggles her family still deals with every day.

"Miss Legg claimed to be my son Kareem's friend, but led him to his death. What kind of a friend would do that? My family's lives are forever changed by his death. Kareem has four children who are now without a father. I'm caring for his eight year old daughter Aniya, who is constantly asking when her dad is coming home," Linda Hunter said.

After hearing about the family's pain, the judge sentenced Legg to eight years in prison for being an accessory to murder and trying to cover up the crime. Hunter's family doesn't think it's nearly enough time behind bars.

"You just gave her some pat on the wrist. Nothing. You didn't do nothing. No man! Get off of me!" Yvonne Hunter said.

And the shouting match continued outside the courtroom.

Two men, Anthony Bryant and Terry Phillips were arrested, Bryant for battery and Phillips for obstructing an officer. While everyone involved seems unhappy with the outcome of this sentencing, prosecutors say Legg did get the maximum sentence on the charges she faced.

"I understand that still doesn't bring the family any relief. It doesn't bring Kareem Hunter back. But the sentence does reflect what Kelsey Legg's involvement was in this and the fact that she has cooperated with us," said Dan Holstein of the Kanawha Co. prosecutor's office.

And prosecutors say that cooperation did lead to the arrest of the two men charged with actually killing Kareem Hunter, Miguel Quinones and Deveron Patterson. Those men are now awaiting trial.

Two people were arrested Tuesday when a fight broke out after the sentencing of Kelsey Legg in the Kareem Hunter murder case.

Anthony Bryant, 36, of Charleston was arrested on a battery charge after pushing down a 54-year -old female victim causing a head injury, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office. The victim was treated at the scene by medics with Charleston Fire Department, but not transported to the hospital.

Terry Lee Phillips, 57, of was arrested on a charge of obstructing an officer, the sheriff’s office said

Bryant and Phillips were arraigned at Kanawha County Magistrate Court and released on bond.

The arrests occurred following the sentencing of Legg in Judge Paul Zakaib’s courtroom at the Kanawha County Judicial Annex. She was sentenced to five to eight years in prison for her role in the murder of Hunter in 2013. Legg was convicted of two charges related to the murder. Miguel Quinones and Deveron Patterson have been charged with first- degree murder in the case.

Family and friends of the victim and defendant were present in the courtroom for the hearing. The sheriff’s office increased the number of bailiffs in and around the courtroom to provide additional security.

Before the hearing at least one person was removed from the courtroom for unruly behavior. After the hearing, as people were departing the building, a fight occurred on the sidewalk along Court Street.

A fight broke outside the Kanawha County Courthouse after the sentencing of Kesley Legg in connection with the Kareem Hunter murder.

Emotions ran high in the courtroom during Legg’s sentencing among Legg and Hunter’s family members, and some were escorted out of the building. At least one person was taken into custody after a fight broke out.

Meanwhile, Legg was sentenced to five years on being an accessory to murder after the fact and one to three years for assisting to hide the murder scene.

Police believe Hunter was murdered at Legg’s apartment in Marmet. His body was discovered in a shallow grave in Raleigh County.
