A west side church no stranger to vandals was hit again. Now members are saying enough is enough and they’re urging the community to come together to keep this from happening again.

When you pass the Rehoboth Cathedral Christ of Church on Main Street, it looks like your typical building. But up close, it’s a much different story. The building is covered in graffiti and on the back side, just about every window’s glass is broken.

"To vandalize a church, that's like you have no respect for God,” said Antonio Lewis, church member. “If you're going to vandalize a church you don't even care about yourself."

Lewis said this church is no stranger to vandalism. In fact, Lewis said it’s been going on for years. Some of this graffiti has been painted over but a lot of the markings are still left behind. This latest vandalism case was discovered during a service last Thursday, according to Lewis.

"This is an ongoing problem,” he said. “We had to do some repairs and stuff and at the time the church is, we are in like a rebuilding stage so our funds are kind of are like almost exhausted but we just want the community to know that this is being done."

The west side of Charleston is known for its bouts of crime. The community organized marches earlier this year to rid the area of crime and come together, but Lewis said it’s time now to walk the walk and do more. He said neighbors need to be on the lookout and if they see something suspicious to call police.

"We just have to pray for the people that are doing it and to pray that we can solve everything," Lewis said.

Eyewitness News is still waiting to hear back from police to see what they’re doing about the vandalism. A neighbor told Eyewitness News she saw officers at the church last week.
