Dunbar , Kanawha County , West Virginia

The search for an apparent drowning victim in the Kanawha River has been called off for the day on Tuesday.

Emergency crews searched the river near the Dunbar Toll Bridge for about four hours after a witness reported seeing a swimmer disappear under the water in the middle of the river. The witness said the man had been swimming for about 15 to 20 minutes and was attempting to swim across the river from Dunbar to South Charleston.

Divers and a boat searched the river. The heat and the river were making it difficult for crews to locate the apparent victim.

A witness told firefighters that a man was attempting to swim across the Kanawha River from Dunbar to the South Charleston side on Tuesday when the swimmer disappeared under the water.

Divers from the Charleston Fire Department were at the scene near the Dunbar Toll Bridge on Tuesday preparing to go into the water to search for the man.

The incident was reported to 911 about 11 a.m. The witness said the man had been swimming for 15 to 20 minutes when he disappeared.

Firefighters from Charleston, Dunbar and South Charleston were at the scene.

Emergency crews are on the scene of a possible drowning in the Dunbar Toll Bridge area.

Metro 911 said a caller reported about 11 a.m. Tuesday that someone was spotted swimming across the Kanawha River in the area of the bridge and appeared to disappear under the water.

An emergency dispatcher said the Dunbar and South Charleston fire departments are at the scene. The dispatcher said emergency crews were talking about getting divers and a boat in the river.
