Hundreds of education and health professionals will be attending a two-day conference at the Charleston Civic Center that focuses on key education and health issues.

The 2014 Immunization Summit will kick off Tuesday and will continue until Wednesday afternoon. The event will be going on in conjunction with the West Virginia Department of Education's KidStrong Conference.

The KidStrong Conference will focus on education, service delivery, school-related issues and immunizations. According to the Immunization Summit Program, the event will "provide information and tools to participants that will help them to provide comprehensive immunization coverage for all age groups, explore innovative strategies for developing immunization programs and identify policies that promote vaccination across the lifespan."

Those urged to attend the KidStrong Conference include school nurses, teachers, school counselors and administrators, public health specialists working with youth, dental hygienists working in schools and mental health employees working in schools. Former first lady Gayle Manchin will be speaking at the KidStrong Conference between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Immunization Summit is expected to draw more than 250 health care professionals, school nurses, state public health officials, representatives from local health departments, students, business leaders and others from around the state. Many children also will be involved.

At 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, Dr. Anne Schuchat, Centers of Disease Control assistant surgeon general, will speak at the Immunization Summit about the record measles outbreak in the United States since the disease was eliminated in this country 14 years ago.

Other notable speakers at the Immunization Summit include:

* Dr. Letita Tierney, commissioner of the Bureau for Public Health and West Virginia state health officer, who will be speaking at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday.

* Pault Reiter, human papillonavirus researcher in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control at Ohio State University, who will be speaking at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday.

* Litjen Tan, chief strategy officer at the Immunization Action Coalition, who will be speaking at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Questions about this conference can be directed to 304-558-8830 or email Linda Payne at lfpayne@access.k12.wv.us.
