Huntington , Cabell County , West Virginia

Huntington authorities said a fire that damaged a Marshall University fraternity's firetruck was deliberately set.

The 1967 International Engine firetruck sits on the front lawn of the Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity house near Marshall's campus. It's a memorial to a fraternity member who died in the 1990s.

City Fire Marshal Steve Ellis told The Herald-Dispatch that someone put a propane tank inside the truck, and then set the vehicle on fire.

Phi Kappa Alpha alumni Cameron Wadley said the fraternity and alumni plan to raise money to repair or replace the truck, which is known as "Thumper."

A firetruck located on front lawn of Pi Kappa Alpha house caught fire early Thursday in Huntington.

The blaze took place at about 1 a.m. at the fraternity house, located on Fifth Avenue near Marshall University.

There were three people at the home at the time of the fire

Member Chase Mooney was at home in bed when he heard someone say, "The firetruck is on fire."

The three went outside and saw flames shooting out the top of it

A short time later, there was a small explosion from the front of the truck.

Someone had taken the propane tank from the fraternity's gas grill and put it in the front seat of the truck.

The majority of the damage was contained to that front area of the truck.

Members said the truck has been there since at least the 1980s, as a memorial to a former member of the fraternity who passed away.

They hope to have it restored and fixed by the fall.

"There's been a lot of stuff that's happened around here, for people doing pranks and stuff,” Mooney said. “It’s the nature of fraternity life, but to deface a memorial like that, it just makes me angry. It really infuriates me.”
