More details have emerged about what caused a fatal accident during rush hour on Interstate 64 on Thursday.
The interstate has since reopened.
It was a combination of several things that caused the fatal crash, and first responders said a seat belt could have made a difference.
It was a perfect storm of tragic circumstances in what first responders said caused a rollover accident, killing the driver of an SUV in the westbound lanes of I-64 between Cross lanes and Nitro.
Evening traffic, raining - anytime you're wearing your seat belt you have a better chance, but Chuck Runyon with the Division of Highways said the driver wasn't wearing hers, when she found herself next to a semi at about 4:30 p.m.
"The tractor trailer started coming over on the vehicle," Runyon said.
That caused her to veer out of her lane, but she overcorrected and rolled her Ford Explorer. Without a seat belt to keep her in, she was ejected through a side window.
"With so many people trying to care for her no one saw the tractor trailer," Runyon said.
State Police were not able to catch up with the semi. The accident had west bound traffic bumper to bumper for hours.
State Police are handling the investigation of the crash.
They are not releasing the name of the victim, as all of her family has not been notified.
Two lanes of Interstate 64 westbound just past Cross Lanes are now open following a single-vehicle wreck that killed the driver, Metro 911 said.
The center and fast lanes of I-64 westbound are open, but the slow lane near the 46 mile marker is closed for about three-quarters of a mile while an accident reconstruction is conducted, an emergency dispatcher said.
The wreck occurred about 4:25 p.m. Thursday when a vehicle went off the roadway and rolled over the guardrail, but the vehicle did not go over the hill.
Two lanes of I-64 westbound between Cross Lanes and Nitro were shut down Thursday afternoon, following a fatal accident.
Dispatchers said one vehicle rolled over near mile marker 46. A fatality was confirmed.
Eyewitness News has a crew headed to the scene. Stay tuned for further updates.
