Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia

A New York theater group will perform a play, based on the recent chemical spill in the Elk River, from a floating stage on the Kanawha River.

If the weather holds up, performances of "An Enemy of the People" will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Subsequent performances will be Saturday, June 14; Sunday, June 15; Thursday, June 19; Friday, June 20; Saturday, June 21; Sunday, June 22; Thursday, June 26; Friday, June 27; Saturday, June 28; and Sunday, June 29. All performances are at 7:30 each night.

The cast will take to the floating stage at the Kanawha River public access dock near the Frontier Building along MacCorkle Avenue. About half of the cast is made up of local performers and the other half out-of-towners.

This play is an adaption of the original.

Jeff Strabone, chairman of the company, said the play is more than just a performance, but it is also a chance to get a dialogue started about the “poison in the contaminated water and the poison in politics.”

Strabone said the group has reached out to state and local officials, inviting them to the play. Each performance is followed by a discussion and encourages audience members to join in the cast.

Tickets are free, but Strabone suggests reserving tickets ahead of time. To reserve tickets, click here.
