Bluefield, Mercer County , West Virginia

A man who is accused of killing his infant son was being sought by Bluefield police Thursday.

A manhunt was under way for Cassidy Byrd, 23, of Bluefield, who is being charged with death of a child by parent or abuse, in connection with the death of Ethan Byrd, who died on April 5.

The infant had a fractured skull, legs and collarbone, as well as multiple bruises. The medical examiner confirmed he was beaten to death.

Police did not originally rule the death as a homicide. Byrd and the mother of the infant, Ashley Owens, had told police the child had trouble breathing after waking up, and died before EMS arrived.

A warrant has been issued for Byrd’s arrest.

Anyone with information on Byrd’s whereabouts is asked to call Bluefield police at 304-327-6101.
