When a task needs performed at the Kanawha County YMCA, Henry "Artie" Taylor is there to fill it.

The little things Taylor does earns him recognition, such as hanging a milk carton box off of his wheelchair or taking dirty towels to the wash room. No matter the job, he always keeps a smile on his face and volunteers his time despite his challenges with cerebral palsy.

For his dedication, he was recently honored as a winner of the Jefferson Award, a public service tribute for community service that has been sponsored locally by WCHS TV for the past 29 years.

“He's always here when he's sick. He always has a smile on his face, no matter if people are up or down,” said Patrick McDonaghey, who nominated Taylor for the award.

McDonaghey said Taylor is constantly telling people hello, and is always upbeat even though he has a severe disability. Taylor was born with cerebral palsy, but even with a severe disability he volunteers his time at the Kanawha County YMCA, and does everything he physically can.

Coworkers of Taylor said there are few more deserving than him because his attitude toward service never changes. Taylor has been volunteering at the YMCA for more than 10 years, and it does not look like he is going to stop anytime soon.

Taylor is one of two Jefferson Award winners in the capital city. Jim Strawn of Charleston is the other recipient. Each will receive the Jefferson Medal from the American Institute for Public Service for their extraordinary community service.
