An invited audience watched Monday the documentary "Fed Up" at Marquee Cinemas in Charleston.

The movie, narrated by Katie Couric, looks at U.S. dietary guidelines, and how sugar may be overlooked as a cause of obesity, diabetes and other health problems.

Several nutritionists said as Americans grow larger, the impact of processed foods is also getting bigger.

"I'm a pediatrician," Jamie Jeffrey with CAMC Women & Children's Hospital said. "I should be taking care of colds, temper tantrums and potty training. And last month I had six new diabetics. Six new diabetics, I didn't even learn about diabetes in medical school."

Some of the problems mentioned in the documentary, including the cozy relationship between soft drink companies and school systems, have been dealt with in West Virginia. The state established new guidelines for schools a few years ago, and soda were on the list of banned items.

"It takes a huge effort," Richard Goff, executive director of the West Virginia Department of Education's Office of Child Nutrition said. "It's so inconvenient to actually sit down and cook from raw ingredients. It's so easy to go through the drive-through. So, we're just going to have to change our lifestyle".

With increasingly busy schedules, it can be very difficult for families to find the time to prepare and eat natural foods. But health care providers say we must plan to eat better, or we are facing a dire future.

"My favorite line is that adults have demanded convenience. Business has answered their demands, but it's killing our kids," Jeffrey said. "And it's time that we come together as a village and raise healthier kids because we're not doing it now."

Marquee Cinemas at Southridge is showing the documentary "Fed Up" through Thursday. The movie is rated PG for thematic elements including smoking images and brief mild language. For showtimes, call 304-744-3456 or click here.
