One person is dead after flames tore through a Kanawha County home early Saturday morning.

Neighbors said the victim is Steve Hasdot and he had lived in the home for a while with his bed-ridden wife, who is currently in the hospital recovering from brain surgery.

"He used my phone two, three, four times a day checking on his wife. And the last thing he told her yesterday was he would see her today," neighbor Billy Legg said.

But unfortunately her husband would never make that trip.

Firefighters responded to the home on Hampshire Drive around 3:30 Saturday morning and said flames were shooting from the roof of the home when they arrived.

Fire marshals said Hasdot just wasn't able to get out in time.

Neighbors said the man has had a troubled life for some time now and was actually scheduled to move into a men's home the same day the fire broke out.

"He was incapable of taking care of himself. He drank a lot," Legg said. "And it was normal, it had been that way for over a year."

Even still neighbors never gave up on Hasdot. Any time he was ever in need, they were there.
They were there even up until his final moments.

"The lady next door, she gave him his last meal yesterday evening," Legg said.

Now with Hasdot's passing, neighbors hope he's finally at peace.

"We done what we could for him," Legg said. "Tried to do the right thing."

Neighbors said they did not hear smoke detectors going off in the home last night.

Fire officials have not confirmed whether or not Hasdot had working smoke alarms.

We do want to remind everyone how important those safety devices are in your home. Be sure to have a detector on every floor and outside sleeping areas.
