Violent Crime Spike Has Fourth Ave Community Concerned

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Dan Matics) -- One area of Huntington, close to Marshall University, is seeing a spike in crime. Police have amped up patrols in the 4th Avenue area but some in the downtown community want even more police presence.

"I grew up here. I am from here. And it's not what it used to be," Jason Black of Huntington said. He says the concern is what happens in the area at night time, specifically on the weekend.

In December, there was a deadly shooting in a bar on 4th Avenue and since March 15 there have been three more shootings in the same block, all near bars and restaurants.

Last weekend, a person was stabbed at a sandwich shop just down the street.

"I don't feel safe! I don't think the level of law enforcement is enough. There’s just too many people," Black says.

That call for a larger police presence is echoed by June Kim who runs a late night diner near the latest incident. He says it's hurting his business.

"People are afraid to come down 4th Avenue," Kim said.

Kim says he's glad to see some more police patrols but wants cameras installed on the street.
