KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (Katy Brown) -- A very disturbing case of possible animal neglect. Now the owners could face criminal charges.
Diana Green lives down the road from the home in Marmet where police uncovered the possible neglect. At least one dog and three cats were found living in a deplorable mess.
"This is as bad as leaving a child in there. For you to leave a pet in conditions like this, you should be locked up," Green said.
For days, Green did not see anyone coming or going from the home, but every time she walked past. she would see a dog in the window.
Green posted a video of the dog on Facebook and her friend Robin Hoblitzell came down to help. Thankfully, the pets are now getting the help and attention they deserve.
"If you can't take care of animals, don't have them," Hoblitzell said. "And if you're going to leave them, give them a fighting chance."
Kanawha County deputies were called, as well as the Kanawha Charleston Humane Officer.
And when the front door was opened to rescue the dog, everyone was shocked.
There was trash, dirt and cockroaches everywhere. And the smell inside was horrendous.
Those helping were even shocked at the number of animals in the home. The dog plus at least 6 cats were all left alone in the mess.
"Obviously I would rather see them surrendered where they're taken care of, but if you're not gong to do that, at least open the doors and let the animals out," Hoblitzell said.
Concerned neighbors and the humane officer will continue to look for more pets in the home.
In the meantime, Green has a warning for anyone with a similar plan and promises to fight for the animals.
"Don't do it and let us know about it. Don't let us find out," Green said.
The dog and three cats have been taken to the animal shelter in Charleston.
Green believes at least three more cats are in the home. Traps have been set to hopefully rescue the animals so they can have a fighting chance too.
