GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (Darrah Wilcox) – Clean-up was under way in Gallia County, following heavy rain.
Residents off U.S. Route 35 were thankful the damage was minimal.
The rains came hard and fast to the area Thursday.
"It was like somebody opened a spigot," Katie Erickson said.
A spigot that wouldn't turn off - Erickson said she was just returning back to her apartment from running errands, when the waters running through this culvert started rising fast.
"It was like rivers going every which way," she said.
She said her mom's lived in the area for 20 years and has never seen the water so high.
"Within 20 minutes, it was just nuts,” she said. “It came all the way up to the yard. It came all the way up to the bricks coming in to the door."
She said all she could do was watch, and wait.
"I was so nervous that it was going to start coming into the door,” she said. “I started thinking about getting some towels and things for the front and the back."
Luckily, the water stopped short of the home.
People in the area said they were just thankful the water receded nearly as quickly as it rose.
"The rain had stopped, and then it started just draining slowly off,” Erickson said. “Once it did, it was fast. It just was gone, and just left the mud."
She put on her boots and got busy cleaning up the thick mud.
"I just went and bought rake, because in the back, there are mud and leaves everywhere."
Thankfully, the clean-up will stay outside, and not in.
"I'm grateful that it didn't get any worse," Erickson said.
