BUFFALO, W.Va. (Chris Williams) -- A child's mind is like a sponge, it soaks up everything it can. That's why teachers say it's so important for kids to start building a solid foundation as early as possible.

"We want to be able to work with those children from the time that they're born, and have that family feel," said Title 1 Reading and Math Teacher at Buffalo Elementary.

Toyota donated more than 34,000 dollars to start this program in West Virginia. Buffalo Elementary is one of only three schools in the state that's going to try “Born Learning Academy,” which focuses on ways parents can work with their kids outside of the classroom, starting from the time they are born until they start school.

"If parents are engaged in more positive interactions, then like we said, they're going to feel more comfortable, and they're going to want to be part of a child’s life," said Title 1 Pre-K Director for Putnam County Schools.

Buffalo Elementary is going to have 6 workshops next year. Parents that sign up for Born Learning Academy are going to find out different ways to teach their kids skills while doing everyday things like: driving, going to the grocery store, or taking a walk.

"The importance of a schedule and routine for children at home. Ways to help the family operate more smoothly at home," added Boggs,” added Boggs.

Boggs said by doing this program, kids will hopefully have a leg up when they start kindergarten. Buffalo Elementary is getting 5,000 dollars to start the program at their school, and will get another grant at the end of next year to keep the program going.

"The long term goal of this is to foster behavioral change of the daily lives of the families that are involved, so that kids are more prepared to start kindergarten,” Meadows added.
