CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Kennie Bass) -- For nearly 61 years, people in the Kanawha Valley have been eating Skeenies hot dogs.

And now, the rest of the world knows something we've known for years: Those hot dogs are pretty good.

The Daily Meal, a food website with 8 million visitors each month, has listed America's 50 best hot dogs, and Skeenies comes in at No. 20!

"The people from out-of-state that were born here and all, when they get back to West Virginia they head for Skeenies because they remember the hot dogs and how good they were," Mary Skeen, Skeenies co-founder and owner, said. "And my husband invented this sauce. It will be 61 years ago, and we keep it just like he started it."

The website describes Skeenies as a true West Virginia-style hot dog, with a steamed bun encasing a skinny frank, topped with chili, snow-white creamy slaw and yellow mustard.

The Daily Meal said ask any West Virginia ex-pat what they're homesick for and Skeenies will inevitably come up.

"Been coming here for years. I love it. We eat here all the time," Stephanie Walker of Charleston said.

"I've come here since I was a kid," Janet Caruthers of Kenna said. "My grandmother lived out Sissonville. When we come out to see my grandmother, we always - this was a big thing, getting to stop here at Skeenies to get hot dogs and ice cream."

For the woman who has been behind the Skeenies counter from the beginning, the national recognition comes as quite a surprise.

"Oh, they have killed us today from what was on the news," Skeen said. "We didn't even know it was on. And they have been pouring in here today, even calling from on the interstate how to find us."

Skeenies Hot Dogs is just inside the Charleston city limits on Sissonville Drive.

The store is open from 10:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., seven days a week.

However, Skeen said they are occasionally closed for short family vacations.

You're welcome to call in your order at 304-342-1814. Remember, Skeenies is a cash-only operation. They do not take credit or debit cards.
