Hurricane Road To Be Completed After Multiple Setbacks

HURRICANE, W.Va. (Sean DeLancey -- A long-awaited construction project is back under way after a mudslide derailed the project last summer.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation undertook a project to extend Hickory Road in Hurricane from the Liberty Square shopping plaza to Crooked Creek.

Businesses at Liberty Square said they are excited to see the project completed, and the foot traffic begin to flow.

"Your business has to grow or you're at a standstill," said Alice Hudnall, a manager at Fiesta Salons in Liberty Square. "Everyone likes small town but growth is good."

Not everyone is excited for the completion of the project, though. Some people in Hurricane think the $3 million price tag is too steep for the building project.

"I just think it's kind of pointless to have a road from a subdivision to Liberty Square." Wade Cole said. " It just seems like a waste of money."

The project was slated to be complete last summer at a cost of $1.9 million, but a mudslide caused planners to rethink the construction.

Planners with the WVDOT decided to move forward with the project with a new price tag of $3 million.

The road is scheduled for completion around Thanksgiving 2014.
