CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Chris Williams) -- Magic Island has all kinds of things to do, especially during the summer months.

"I love it down here, it’s beautiful," said Charleston resident Angela Mack.

Now Charleston is hoping to add another attraction on the island. A splash pad, similar to the one in Hurricane, for kids to hang out, and cool off in during the summer.

"I would bring my grandkids here to the splash pool, yes I would," Mack said.

Charleston City Council approved the city to apply for a grant up to $150,000. If the city does get the grant, the splash pad is going to have to be finished by the end of this year.

"It's another thing that would add to Magic Island, and all we have down here. You're just going to have a big massive park down here right along the riverfront," Charleston Parks and Recreation Director John Charnock said.

Charnock said the splash pad would likely be placed down from the playground, so flooding can be avoided when the river rises. If it becomes reality, the splash pad would be free -- music to the ears of city residents.

"There aren't too many activities that don't cost money. A lot of these people don't have the money to put their kids in these different functions," Charleston resident Renee Young said.

Several residents said there isn't anywhere for kids in Charleston to hang out, and this would be a great place for them to gather.

"They need some place where they can go, have a ball and stay out of trouble," Mack said.
