PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (Jeff Morris) – A father in Parkersburg has been arrested after police said he acknowledged he struck his 22-month-old child in the head with an open hand because the child was crying.

Travis Berry, 20, is charged with child abuse resulting in injury, according to a news release from the Parkersburg Police Department.

Parkersburg police received a call early Friday morning from the emergency department of Camden Clark Memorial Hospital regarding the possible abuse of a child. Officers arrived and spoke to the medical staff who advised that the baby was brought to the emergency room to receive treatment for bruises. Police said the parents could not provide the medical staff any explanation as to how the injuries occurred.

The hospital staff followed protocol and called police. Police said the child had swelling and bruises on his forehead, the left side of his face and swelling to his left ear.

While giving a statement to police, Berry acknowledged hitting the child because it was crying and he was placed under arrest, the release said.

Berry was taken before Magistrate Joyce Purkey who issued a $65,000 bond. Berry failed to post bond and remained jailed Monday in the North Central Regional Jail. The condition of the child was unavailable.
