LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Heath Harrison) – With the Kentucky primary coming up on Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has a sizable lead over his primary challenger in the latest polling, but is in a dead heat with a Democratic opponent for the fall.

According to the Bluegrass poll, McConnell leads Bevin among likely Republican primary voters, 55 to 35 percent.

McConnell, the Senate’s minority leader, was first elected to the chamber in 1984 and is seeking a sixth term. Bevin, a Louisville businessman has been mounting a conservative challenge to McConnell and has the backing of some tea party groups in the state.

In a potential general election match-up, the poll found McConnell slightly trailing likely opponent, Democratic Secretary of State Allison Lundergan Grimes. Grimes’ lead of 43 to McConnell’s 42 percent was within the poll’s margin of error.

The Senate race is expected to be one of the most competitive in the nation.

The survey of 2,000 adults on home and cell phones was conducted from May 14-16. The poll’s margin of error is +/- 4 percent.
