CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Heath Harrison) – Former West Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Nick Casey will face off with former Maryland Republican Party Chairman Alex Mooney in the race for West Virginia’s 2nd District U.S. House seat.

Casey defeated Del. Meshea Poore, D-Kanawha, for the race to fill the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.

Mooney defeated a crowded GOP field, including Ken Reed, Charlotte Lane, Steve Harrison, Ron Walters Jr., Jim Moss and Robert Fluharty.

Casey, a Charleston attorney, served as chairman of the West Virginia Democratic Party from 2004 to 2010.

Mooney, a former Maryland state senator, served as his state’s party head and moved to West Virginia in 2013 after opting out of a race for U.S. House in Maryland in 2012.

Capito is vacating the House seat to pursue a run for U.S. Senate.

Former CBS journalist Ed Rabel is seeking the nomination of the Mountain Party in the race.
