SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katy Brown) -- A Kanawha County man was arrested and is facing serious charges of child abuse.
South Charleston Police arrested Eric Richmond, 42, Friday night on charges of child abuse and malicious wounding.
According to court documents, Richmond picked up his girlfriend's son from Bridgeview Elementary after the child was suspended.
Once home, the juvenile told police Richmond choked him and made him undress. Richmond then allegedly hit the child several times with a black leather belt, which left bruises all over his back, legs and bottom.
The charges disgust Aszim McCorkle, a father of three.
"I think that it's really bad that people have to resort to violence with their children," he said. "I think there should be a better way of handling it. You should give a time-out or talk to your children about right and wrong and things like that. I think beating them all the time isn't going to get them to listen."
Although Nykira Miller may only be 8 years old, she is old enough to know the alleged actions of this man are wrong.
"Don't be a dummy,” she said. “Whatever reflects on your life, reflects on your kid's life."
Richmond appeared before Magistrate Michael Sisson Saturday morning and he was not too happy with his $10,000 cash-only bond.
He even asked Sisson if he would lower the bond, which Sisson denied.
Richmond's case will move forward, but for other parents like McCorkle, this kind of alleged behavior is easy to avoid.
"Just go easy on the children, be a good parent," McCorkle said.
Richmond was taken to the South Central Regional Jail. His preliminary hearing is set for May 19.
