CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A new poll gives U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., a nine-point lead in a general election match-up with Republican state Sen. Evan Jenkins, R-Cabell, in the race for West Virginia’s 3rd District U.S. House race.

A new survey, conducted by DFM Research for SMART Transportation Division, which supports Rahall, finds the longtime Congressman leading Jenkins among likely voters, 48 to 39 percent.

The poll of 400 randomly-sampled respondents was conducted from April 22 to 27 and has a margin of error of +/- 4.9 percent.

The poll found that 47 percent of voters view Rahall favorably, while 43 percent have an unfavorable opinion. Jenkins has a favorability rating of 23 percent in the survey, with 21 percent holding an unfavorable opinion.

The race is considered one of the most competitive in the country and is attracting national attention and heavy spending by outside groups. Rahall is one of seven Democratic incumbents targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Jenkins changed his registration from Democratic to Republican prior to challenging Rahall.

Rahall faces Richard Ojeda in the May 13 Democratic primary. The general election is set for May 13.

The survey results are similar to poll by the Democratic-leaning House Majority PAC from April, which had Rahall leading Jenkins, 52 to 40 percent. A poll by the conservative Tarrance Group in March had Jenkins leading, 54 to 40 percent. A survey by Harper polling for the Jenkins campaign had Rahall leading, 46 to 42 percent.
