HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Darrah Wilcox) -- Several Huntington-area parks are getting spruced up for the spring and summer.
"It's all about being a healthier Huntington and a happier Huntington," Kevin Brady, Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District director, said
In Rotary Park, crews worked to pave 1.2 miles of biking and hiking trails.
It's an area that's gotten a bad reputation over the past couple decades, but the GHPRD is working hard to change that, striving to make it a mountain bike destination, and putting in a new playground.
"More good people in the parks means less bad activity in the parks, so please, come out and check it out," Brady said.
Jesse Ross and his wife love the scenery here. He said they come to Rotary Park every day to walk.
"It's nice," he said.
Lance Parsley and his friends came up from Inez, Kentucky to play disc golf.
"We're just going to play a couple rounds," he said.
There are two popular disc golf courses at Rotary Park. Parsley said seeing even more improvements at the park is promising.
"It's exciting. It's a beautiful park. It's got one of the nicest disc golf courses in the area," he said.
Harris Riverfront park is getting a new playground this week. The old one was removed several years ago due to wear and tear.
It's one of four new parks installed around Huntington in the past few years. Another new playground will go in at April Dawn Park in Milton by this summer.
Brady encourages everyone to check out what their nearest park has to offer.
"Get off the couch, get out in the parks. Do some movement, Play on the playground. Anything," he said.
