WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (Leslie Rubin) -- Some say public trust is what's on the ballot in corruption plagued Mingo County, as voters cross their fingers that Tuesday's election will bring change.

As the countdown to election day creeps closers, perhaps nowhere in the state has more eyes on it than Mingo County.

"A bad name is hard to overcome and we have in this county, a bad reputation. Hopefully this time, this will make a difference and we see things change for the better," Stanley Hatfield of Varney said.

He was out early voting on Thursday.

The county has seen four office holders resign following federal convictions. Their circuit judge, a county commissioner, prosecutor, and magistrate seats left to be filled for those unexpired terms. Their sheriff, Eugene Crum, murdered just before those investigations came into the spotlight.

"It is the biggest election, because you have five vacancies on that ballot that wasn't on it in the last election because of the corruption," early voter Denise Sammons of Kermit said.

"I feel that the future, the dark cloud hanging over this, is the future looks brighter in this election, because it is going to be change from what we've had with the good 'ol boy system," she said.

"We're hope that these politicians this time around will start doing something for our county," Stanley Hatfield said.

Workers at the Mingo County Clerk's Office say early voting is off to a strong start, with more than 400 ballots cast.

Eyewitness News will have live reports from Mingo County on election night.
