CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Jeff Morris) – A Facebook page created to save a Charleston landmark already has collected 900 followers.

Save Top-O-Rock was started after it was reported the house known for its unique architecture may be demolished after it was repeatedly vandalized.

“I am so impressed by the number of people willing to volunteer to clean up and help secure the property,” Susie Salisbury wrote. “I hope the owners take us up on our offers. Our wonderful community is ready to get to work.”

Dustin Casto said he is greatly saddened to see what has happened to the home.

“I live near this house, and I see it every day,” Casto wrote. “It breaks my heart seeing a piece of art vandalized.”

Vandals have left the home is covered with graffiti, trash and broken glass. Dr. Mitchell Rashid and his wife have been issued five citations for the damage. Now they have 21 days to provide the city with a plan to repair the iconic home. If they don't respond to the city, they could face a fine of up to $2,500.

But Rodney Loftis and Son Contracting has been given a contract to tear down Top-O-Rock. No word on when that might happen.

One person who commented on the Facebook page said he had put the owner in touch with a well-respected consultant to start a dialogue.

“I hope everyone can remain positive and by all means, keep all the ideas flowing and share them here so we can try to compile a menu of good options to explore,” Michael Corlis said.
