CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Leslie Rubin) -- A man accused of attacking a Charleston police officer with a hammer is speaking out from jail.

Richard Sherrick, 45, is the same man that holds the record for most arrests on the Fugitive Files. He said he's being singled out by police because he refused to cooperate with them in another high profile case.

Sherrick said he was ready to testify for convicted Kanawha County sniper Shawn Lester, and claims that's why Charleston police want him in jail.

"Probably 40 some times, if not more," Sherrick said, then laughed, when asked how many times he's been arrested..

Sherrick has become a familiar face on Eyewitness News. He proclaimed himself an "outlaw" during a recent arrest, and refuses to go down without a fight.

Sherrick was asked if he ever got sick of running from police.

"No," he said during a previous arrest. "There's two types of people in this world. Law abiding citizens and outlaws. I'm just an outlaw."

"Last month, I was on the Fugitive Files, what, three or four times?" he asked.

Sherrick said, of his most recent arrests, for everything from stealing car, a high speed police chase, to burglary and meth, that he's only guilty of two of them. He was reluctant to say which two, saying he was going to "plead the fifth" during the interview.

Sherrick was asked he stole a lot.

"I do. I do steal, yeah. I'm not saying I don't," he said.

On Tuesday, Charleston Police got a tip Sherrick was hiding out at a home on Stuart Street. They were trying to serve him with his latest warrant in another stolen car case. He also recently had his bond revoked. Sgt. Bobby Eggleton said Sherrick hit him with a hammer in the process.

"He swung a hammer at me, hit me in the hand. At which time he fled back in the case, which we lead chase to it. He hid underneath some mattresses in the bottom," Eggleton said.

"I didn't hit him, I've never hit a cop," Sherrick said, denying he had a weapon.

Sherrick claimed police are out to get him because he refused to testify against Lester, who he also called his good friend. He echoes Charleston police's earlier statements that Lester had help committing the sniper murder with a man named Rodney Shaffer, Sr. aka "Big Rod."

"I don't agree with what Shawn Lester did. By no means do I agree with what he did, he took three lives. Well, he took two of them," he said. "Big Rod was the first trigger puller, they know it."

In the end, this three time convicted felon said he's ready to spend taxpayer money to have his latest cases heard by a jury.

"Fire up the press, let's spend this money! I want a jury trial for each and every felony. I want to spend $50,000 on every one of them. Period," Sherrick said.

Dan Holstein, with the Kanawha County Prosecutor's Office, said they will be doing everything in their power to keep Sherrick in jail and will prosecute the case to the fullest.
