Kittens Found In Garbage Bag In Dunbar

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) -- Three kittens, just three weeks old, are fighting for their lives after being found dumped in a garbage bag near a grocery store in Dunbar on Monday.

A good samaritan found the bag full of kittens and took them to the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association. The kittens were in poor shape, were infested with fleas, parasites and had respiratory illnesses. One of them didn't survive.

Three are being treated at the Kanawha Boulevard Animal Hospital.

"They are critical," said Dr. Eric Lee, Veterinarian. "We certainly aren't out of the woods by any means. I think we made a lot of progress since last night."

Dr. Lee is helping to bring these kittens' health back up to par.

"We've got a tough road ahead if these guys are going to make it," he said. "That was my initial reaction. I wasn't sure we would make it through the night with any of them."

Dr. Lee said the kittens were neglected for several weeks. He said now it's about treatment, getting them fluids and antibiotics.

"It's an hour by hour thing," he said. "It's all about how they respond and treating their symptoms as they come forward but I'd feel much better if they'd start to eat."

Dr. Lee said it could cost several hundred dollars to care for these kittens but the community is already stepping up and donating money to give these babies a fighting chance.

"It's heartbreaking," he said. "I guess you try to look at it from the other stand point is for that one person that didn't care and left them there in a bag, somebody else did care and then you see the generosity of the public coming forward trying to help make sure they have a shot."

Doctors said they hope these kittens make a full recovery. Lee said this case highlights the problem of unwanted cats in the area. A group called the "Itty Bitty Kitty Committee" works hard to save as many kittens as they can and is working on this case.
