CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Kera Mashek) Tuesday became another day with arrests stemming from an incident on Charleston's west side. While on patrol at 7th Avenue and Rebecca Street, a Charleston Police officer was flagged down by a man who said two men had just tried to shoot him.

"We wasn't trying to rob nobody. Don't know what ya'll are talking about," the suspects said as they were arrested.

Officers say two stepbrothers, 25-year-old Richard Gilmore and 19-year-old Carlos Gibson got into an argument with the victim, Russell Slater and drove up to him with a gun pointed out the car window. Charleston Police are continuing their efforts to crackdown on crime, especially on the west side where there's been so much violence lately. It just turned out the officer who was in the right place at the right time to track down the suspects before the incident turned violent.

"What we're most proud of is our officers appear to be Johnny-on-the-spot. They're right there when this stuff's happening. Today we like to attribute it to his close proximity to that. It's Cpl. Ryan Anderson who prevented possibly another shooting and possibly another homicide," said Lt. Shawn Williams with the Charleston Police Department.

Gilmore is charged with felon possession of a firearm, while Gibson's charged with wanton endangerment. Both were given a $10,000 bond.

The judge also ordered the brothers not to have contact with the Slater family and warned them that if they do, and are arrested again, they won't be given the chance to bond out of jail.
