CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Chris Williams) -- This winter we saw sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow fall...And both of those things are the perfect combination for potholes.

"I've seen tires that bust; we're seeing rims bust as well,” said C Adam Toney Salesman Keith Rappold.

C Adam Toney Tires, in Hurricane, is fixing about 10 cars a day that have been dinged up by potholes. This winter did major damage to the roads, but West Virginians for better transportation say the problem is bigger than just this winter.

"We simply haven't been investing in our highway system the way we should for many many years," said Spokesman for West Virginia Better Transportation Joe Deneault.

The West Virginia Division of Highways gets most of their money through the state road fund, which is funded by the fuel tax.

"That’s our challenge. It's not about the state road fund, and how we're funded, but its additional revenues to be able to continue to keep up with maintenance of these roads,” said West Virginia Department of Highways Communications Director Brent Walker.

Walker says the roads are getting better around the state, but Deneault says more needs to be done. He says about 380 million dollars a year needs to be spent on improving roadways around the state.

"The best way to do that is for citizens to tell their legislators, hey we want good roads. We want them now, and we want them in the future," Deneault added.

Deneault says some of our surrounding states have already passed laws to fund highway maintenance. Summer road construction is getting started, but drivers are still pulling into the body shop.

"It's happening at an exponential rate, probably two or three times worse than I've ever seen it in previous years,” added Rappold.
