CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Stefano DiPietrantonio) - People living on Charleston’s West Side are taking exactly the kind of action police have longed hoped for.
If you see something, say something - and that's exactly what one person did, simply picked up their phone and reported three people acting suspiciously in a burgundy, older-model Jeep Cherokee.
Turned out, that caller's concerns were spot on. Both of the men, police said, were carrying loaded weapons. And the woman , who is a convicted felon, had pills and a 44-magnum rifle in the vehicle.
Eyewitness News arrived as police were handcuffing Antonio Williams, 22, of Charleston. Kimberly Monk, 51, was sitting on the curb, in cuffs.
"It was just my vehicle, I didn't even have it all night," Monk pleaded to the police officer, as she was led away to jail.
Police said Monk, who is a convicted felon, had a .44 magnum rifle under the back seats and a container full of pills.
"There were several thousand dollars, prescription medications which didn't belong to any of the subjects in the vehicle," Lt. Shawn Williams, with the Charleston Police Department, said.
Perry Kessell , 51, was led into the courtroom, his hands tightly cuffed.
"He [Kessell] had a loaded .22-caliber Derringer in his front pocket,” Williams said. “Which is not only dangerous for police officers responding, but anybody."
At his arraignment Friday night, Kessell was stunned at the cash-only bond set by Magistrate Jack Pauley.
"Your bond is $5,000 cash bond,” Pauley said.
“Whew!,” exhaled Kessell.
“You need to sign at the bottom," Pauley said.
Williams was equally agitated as he was brought to court.
"I don't know why they got all them cameras here for!” Williams said loudly.
“You be quiet,” Pauley said. “You're in a courtroom."
Pauley reminded Williams of the gravity of the situation.
"I feel like, like,” protested Williams.
“Wait a minute, No!,” Pauley said tersely. “This is not question and answer. I do the talking, you say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ "
Cash bonds were set at $5,000 dollars each for Williams and Kessell, and all because of one thing.
"They had ground-off the serial numbers, which is a federal offense," Williams said. "Without the citizen relationship we've developed over the past couple months, these kinds of things wouldn't work."
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Taisha Walker) -- A call concerning suspicious activity led to the arrest of three people Friday on Charleston's West Side.
Three people, including a convicted felon, face charges of selling and carrying a deadly weapon. Police said they found a rifle and two handguns in an eggplant-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee parked on Maryland Avenue.
Officers are commending people in the community for reporting suspicious activity. A neighbor told Eyewitness News that he saw three oddly paired people sitting in the Jeep. He said one person was walking funny and was cautious as he sat in the vehicle, as if he had the rifle in his possession. The neighbor said he is on high alert after a string of violent crimes on the city's West Side.
Charges against the three suspects are pending.
