CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Kennie Bass) - In early 17th century France, all is not well. The evil Cardinal Richelieu is plotting to overthrow King Louis XIII and seize the throne

At the same time, a young adventurer named d'Artagnan is making his way to Paris to join the Musketeers of the Guard.

Adapted from the novel by Alexander Dumas, "The Three Musketeers" is filled with action, romance, sword fights and a dash of humor as d'Artagnan meets the musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis.

Together, they learn of the plot and work to save the monarchy.

"Oh, goodness, who doesn't love a classic adventure story like 'The Three Musketeers?'" John Johnson (Athos) said. "And you know, this is a part that's been played by so many different people. Van Heflin played the part, Oliver Reed. This is my take and it's just fun to jump in there and try to do a classic role."

Veteran actor Alex Bannerman is playing the villainous Cardinal. He says its been interesting to explore the many faces of the character.

"He has a lot of layers," Bannerman (Cardinal Richelieu) said. "As a matter of fact when (director) Kelly (Strom) said, 'Hey I want you to play this character.' And I said I don't know. She said, 'Oh it's right up your alley. Lots and lots and lots of layers.'"

Rob James makes his theatrical debut as d'Artagnan. He says bringing the swashbuckler to life has been an challenging experience.

"We have a gentleman that helps us with swords," James (d'Artagnan) said. "So, he's been great, it's been fantastic. Yeah, I've been nervous but it's been a process. We didn't just pick up a sword and try to stab each other initially."

With several scenes of stage combat featuring choreographed sword fighting, some of the action may frighten small children. However, the actors say this is a family-friendly production with lessons about honor and loyalty, all for one and one for all.
