CHARLESTON W.Va (Fallon Pierson) -- If you have old prescriptions in your medicine cabinet, there is a way to
get rid of them safely.

National Drug Take-Back Day is on Saturday.

This initiative has collected more than 13 tons of unwanted prescription drugs in years past.

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office said that over the past seven to eight years, it has seen a huge spike in crimes relating to prescription drugs-including home invasions.

The sheriff's office said the drug take-back initiative has helped slow the problem.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said that the old pills in the back of your medicine cabinet are gateway drugs to heroin and that it's critical to properly dispose of them, so they don't make it back out on the streets.

"Seventy percent of drugs that are illegaly diverted for illicit use come directly from the medicine cabinet or from friends and family. So, it's so critical for those drugs to get off the streets, out of those medicine cabinets," Goodwin said.

Chief Deputy Mike Rutherford of the Kanawha Co. Sheriff's Office said it has "helped us tremendously. We hope to do it for many years to come."

Drug Take-Back Day is 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday.

You can drop off your old prescriptions at many different locations across the state, including the sheriff's office detachment in St.Albans.
