CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Leslie Rubin) -- The son of a murdered Charleston woman is working to carry on her memory in hopes that her life will not be overshadowed by the tragic way she died.

In just about a week, it will have been two years since Kathy Goble's remains were found buried in her Kelley's Mens Shop coworker Charles March's yard.

For two years and one day, her son, Jason McCartney, had no clue what happened to her.

His search for answers led him to a group whose sole mission is to find missing people.

Today, McCartney has made that part of his mission, and hopes the community will come together next weekend to remember his mom, and help those tasked with finding missing loved ones.

A little more than a year ago, Jason got a dog named Deuce. Deuce is in the process of becoming certified to find people lost in the woods. He also shares the same birthday as Goble.

"Things happen for a reason, so I think, getting him and the whole circumstances and everything kind of led me to help people however I can," McCartney said.

His mom's disappearance and the horrific details that eventually came to light regarding her murder led McCartney to want to carry on his mother's legacy and not have the focus be on the way she died, but rather, the way she lived.

"That's my number one goal, to keep her memory alive and the good things she did for the community and Charleston and hopefully carry on some things she instilled in me growing up," he said.

Today, Jason is part of the volunteer-based West Virginia K9 Search and Rescue. He met the group when they came to search for his mom when her car was found abandoned on Interstate 64 in 2010.

Steve Shanklin and his dog Harley worked to find any sign of Goble, with no luck. Shanklin said the cases with no closure are never far from his mind.

"It's frustrating when you go on a search and you can't find them, or you know, they're not there. You sit up at night wondering, 'where could these people be?' I can't imagine one of my family members being missing, the hurt that these familys go through," Shanklin said.

McCartney has since started the Kathy Goble Foundation, with proceeds from a hope walk being held next weekend to go to West Virginia K9 Search and Rescue. Proceeds will go toward everyday costs for the dogs, to insurance and training.

"I think she would be proud. Hopefully she's looking down on me, smiling, you know again, like she always did...saying 'good job,'" McCartney said.

The Hope Walk in memory of Kathy Goble will be on Saturday, April 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Shawnee Park in Dunbar. There will be a one mile walk, along with activities for children.

There will be free face painting, a jump house, and horse therapy for autistic children, just to name a few things.
