RUTLEDGE, W.Va. (Katy Brown) -- Two men were left injured, one seriously, after an early morning fight and stabbing in Kanawha County on Sunday.
According to people living at Mill Creek Landing apartments, the area is usually quiet and rarely are there any problems.
It's safe to say many there were shocked when they opened their doors this morning to find blood..
"Crazy when it's at your home, at your doorstep," Debbie Bishop, who has lived in complex for two years, said. "Literally at my door step."
Blood was spattered on the sidewalks, smeared on doors and trailed through the apartment complex in Rutledge.
Kanawha County deputies responded to a fight and possible stabbing on Wise Acres Drive just before 3 a.m. Sunday.
"My understanding is some dudes got to scrapping over there and I guess they wanted to shut him up," Brain Barnes, who has lived there for a year, said.
People living in the apartment complex said the fight started across the road.
They said the stabbing victim, Jerry Shaffer, 31, of Elkview, then tried to get help by stopping at one apartment building before a neighbor found him and called 911.
When deputies responded, they said Shaffer had a lot of blood coming from his neck.
"Thank God that he did make it where he did and somebody was there to help him," Bishop said. "Because I believe in my heart if somebody wouldn't have been there, the boy wouldn't have made it because he was just hurt too bad."
Deputies arrested Jason Allen Wright, 33, of Summersville at the scene and charged him with malicious assault.
Now neighbors hope Shaffer has a speedy recovery and a lesson is learned for everyone involved.
"Watch who you hang with. I mean if that's a so called friend it's not much of a friend that's going to almost take your life," said Bishop.
Police said the suspect, Jason Wright, was also hurt during the fight and had to be taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment before being arraigned on the malicious assault charge.
He's now being held at the South Central Regional Jail.
