RED HOUSE, W.Va. (Katy Brown) -- For people who hardly ever hear of a murder happening in their area, Saturday's news that a man was shot and killed in Putnam County has definitely shaken up those living in the rural community.
One neighbor said "it's usually quiet out here but this morning it wasn't."
Putnam County deputies said just before 7 a.m. Saturday they responded to a domestic violence situation on Grandview Ridge Road in Red House and shots were fired.
"We had heard there was a shooting. We tried to piece together what was going on," said Josh Lewis who lives down the road. "It's a small community. It don't take very long to figure out. Word travels pretty fast."
Police said 31-year-old Curtis Adams broke into his ex-girfriend's home, kicking in the front door. That's when she fired back with a shotgun.
Adams was shot in the chest and taken to a nearby volunteer fire department to meet an ambulance. And that's where Adams died.
Deputies went to the home where Adams' ex-girlfriend and five children, one of whom she and Adams share, waited to be questioned.
One man described the ex-girlfriend as "a good neighbor. We've always got along well. All this is a really big shock."
Police said the couple had previous domestic violence situations where police were called to the home.
And domestic violence seems to be a common thread in Putnam County when police are dealing with murders.
"We had one similar like this a couple years ago," said a neighbor. "It was over on that road over there Bronco Junction."
In 2009 Angela Casto was shot and killed at her boyfriend's home on Bronco Junction. Jesse Cossin pleaded guilty to the murder and malicious wounding charges.
As for Grandview, no one has been arrested in this investigation and neighbors are hoping whatever the outcome is that it's for the best.
"I hope that everything works out in the end," said Lewis.
The former girlfriend was questioned Saturday and the investigation is ongoing.
Deputies said the case will be presented to the grand jury to see if any charges will follow.
