SALT ROCK, W.Va. (Darrah Wilcox, Tiersa Davis) -- Eugene "J.R." Turpin has lived off Route 10 for a decade and says he's never been concerned for his safety or his family's here-- but that all changed Thursday morning. "This has never happened in the neighborhood, never, in ten years that I've been here. Never. No break-ins," he said.
About 2:00 a.m. Thursday, Cabell County deputies say a man tried to break into Turpin's neighbor's home, but that homeowner fought back, shooting the man trying to get in.
"Everything in the investigation leads us to believe that the homeowner was absolutely justified in his use of deadly force the circumstances that were present," said sheriff Tom McComas.
Deputies found a blood trail near the home and a crowbar and got a call that 26-year old Ray Davis showed up at St. Mary's Medical Center with a gunshot wound. Relatives with him told deputies he had broken into the house.
McComas said, "This is just a sad reminder that we have to vigilant about our safety even in our own homes in this day and time."
Turpin says he would do the same, if it meant protecting his family. "In a minute! I have two guns," he said. He said while he wouldn't fire at once, he would make it clear he had a weapon. "You know, (I'd) give them the opportunity to surrender or be fire upon."
He says he hopes he'll never have to actually make that decision.
McComas said the homeowner in the case is not being charged, but they'll hand over information to the prosecutor to possibly present the case to a grand jury.
Davis is expected to be charged with burglary when he's released from the hospital.
SALT ROCK, W.Va. (Tiersa Davis)-- The Cabell County Sheriff's Department is investigating after it said a homeowner shot a burglary suspect.
The sheriff's office said it happened about 2 a.m. Thursday at a home in the 5200 block of Route 10 in Salt Rock. Deputies said the homeowner told them the burglary suspect was shot and fled on foot to a vehicle parked a short distance away.
Deputies said they found a blood trail leading away from the home, a crowbar and a tennis shoe. Deputies received a call that Ray A. Davis, 26, of Salt Rock had been brought to St. Mary's Medical Center with a gunshot wound. Relatives that brought the suspect to the hospital told deputies he had broken into the house and was shot.
Deputies said warrants were issued for Davis, who is recovering from surgery for shot gun pellets to his stomach and a shoulder injury. Davis is expected to make a full recovery.
The sheriff's department said the homeowner is not facing charges at this time.
