HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Darrah Wilcox) -- Huntington City Council Chambers was filled to capacity Monday as Jim Johnson was sworn in as interim police chief.

Johnson worked at Huntington Police Department for 29 years and retired in 2001, and then worked for three years as the Cabell County Jail administrator.

Johnson said he knows a lot has changed since his time at the department, but some things remain constant.

"Technology is different obviously, but it still comes back to getting the bad guys off the streets and providing a service for the citizens," he said.

Johnson also will be one of 10 members on the search committee for a new police chief.

"I think the positions that I've held will be beneficial to the committee," he said.

Council chairman Mark Bates also is on the committee, which includes a member from Marshall University, the Chamber of Commerce, a local neighborhood group member, a pastor and a retired state trooper.

"The committee is very diverse and that should help us to find the best candidate because there may be qualities that I'm looking for, that I didn't think about that another committee member may have to bring forward," Bates said.

Committee members are expected to meet again next month to start going through applications. They wll start narrowing it down to three candidates. Bates said Chief Skip Holbrook left big shoes to fill, and they plan to find someone who will do the city proud.

"You need someone very professional. Someone who has a good work ethic and inspects what they expect," he said.

Mayor Steve Williams will make the ultimate decision once committee members have narrowed down the candidates. They are currently advertising the position through several national mediums.
