CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Taisha Walker) -- You could receive a knock on your door this week from a group of volunteers working to conduct a water survey.

Starting Tuesday, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are sending 30 volunteers to randomly go door-to-door to have people from 210 households fill out a questionnaire. The Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) consists of 35 public health and disaster related questions. Respondents will be asked about the number of people living within their household, how they used the water following January's chemical leak into the Elk River and how the leak affected their health.

Loretta Haddy, state epidemiologist with the West Virginia Department of Human and Health Resources, said people in the nine counties affected by the chemical leak will be surveyed, but there is not a specific number of households being targeted in each county.

"What we actually have are 30 sampling blocks and in each one of those blocks there's seven households, so there's 210 households that would be the representative sample for the event," Haddy said.

CASPER begins Tuesday and wraps up Thursday. It's the first time the survey will be conducted in West Virginia following a major crisis.

All volunteers should identify themselves as a public health worker before beginning the survey. The questionnaire is voluntary.

Haddy said results from the sampling are expected to be released within the month of April. She said she hopes the survey will help better prepare West Virginians during a future crisis.
